“Why hasn’t Shade leveled?” he asked. By his calculations she had 538XP.

“You need to go into her menu and accept her increase in levels. It’s a failsafe in case it would be detrimental to her to just level up during a fight.” Slane knelt on the other side of the little wolf. Jayden could tell she had more than just a soft spot for Shade.

“Detrimental?”

“A familiar will automatically grow in size as it levels. Imagine if you were fighting in a confined space, like a dungeon corridor, and your familiar suddenly crushed you against the wall, or worse, could no longer get out of the door.”

Jayden pulled down Shade’s menu and saw its highlighted notifications.

Shade has passed 250XP. She has leveled up. Do you wish to increase her level? Y/N

Jayden accepted.

Shade pulsed, and her fur stood on end as if an electrical surge was passing through her. She blurred and gained a third of her original size.

Shade has passed 500XP. She has leveled up. Do you wish to increase her level? Y/N

Jayden accepted, and Shade pulsed again, coming up to Jayden’s knee. While she didn’t yet look fearsome, she was certainly getting there.

Dusk was beginning to cloak the sacred valley.

“Time to go,” he said. “There won’t be enough healing potion in all of Avila to temper Mrs. Mort’s wrath if we don’t turn up. I’m going to swing by the mine on the way. I need a word with Cox.”
